The Golden Valley Light railway

A 2ft (610mm) Narrow Gauge Railway in Derbyshire

Ruston7002/0567/6

This is a Class LBT 2YDA locomotive with a 2 cylinder air cooled diesel engine rated at 31½HP.
It was built at Ruston’s Ironworks rather than the Boultham Works which saw most of the production.
It was delivered new to the Stoke Bardolph Sewage Works in Nottinghamshire in 1967. It worked there taking sediment away from the filter beds.

At the end of its working life in late 1989, it was placed on display at the Papplewick Pumping Station Trust’s Industrial Museum site just north of Nottingham. It was then transferred to the GVLR, arriving on site mid-1996. It was placed on outside display along with 2 “V” skips. It awaits restoration to running condition.

The Ruston YDA engine range consisted of 2, 3, 4 and 6 cylinder variants each supplied at one of four different ratings. They were designated 2YDA, 3YDA, 4YDA and 6 YDA.
The 2YDA at 1900rpm would produce 31½HP.

The loco has a three speed gearbox in either direction worked by hydraulic cone clutches controlled by short levers in the cab.
The loco has, in its working life, displayed two fleet numbers – L203 N and U84 – the latter certainly in its final working years in Severn Trent Water Authority ownership.
