Steam Locomotive - O&K 7529 - History

This 0-4-0 well tank loco was built by Orenstein and Koppel of Germany, and completed in 1914. It first went to work in a sand quarry 15 kms south of Fontainbleau in France.

The next records show it working in 1920 at a sand quarry near Paris carrying the number 2. After over 40 years of working it was brought to England in the late 1960's.

O&K 7529 under restoration

"O&K 7529"

Since being moved into the loco shed in October 2001, the loco has been substantially stripped. A new smokebox has been fitted since this picture was taken. The owner is now fabricating a new ashpan, before building a new cab for the loco.

Eventually the loco was bought by John Lucas and removed to the Cadeby Light Railway in Leicestershire, where it lay until being purchased by Eddie Draper, one of our working members. It arrived on site at Butterley Park on 28th January 1995.

The loco weighs about 8 tonnes and is rated at 50Hp. It has one unusual feature, a steam-operated bell. This would normally be fitted to locos, which would be required to operate on a roadside line.

The loco was consigned to a siding at GVLR whilst other work, such as the opening of the railway extension in 1999 and other rolling stock took priority. But in September 2001 the owner got married, and members of the GVLR shunted O&K 7529 into the Loco Shed so that the happy couple could begin married life restoring it.
