The Golden Valley Light Railway
Motor Rail 60S 364 "Campbells"
Built 1968 for Stanton & Staveley Ltd. and delivered to Campbell's
Brickworks near Chesterfield. It had a short life in service before being
replaced by lorries and placed in store. Kindly placed on permanent loan to
the G.V.L.R. by Campbell Innes.
Simplex 40SD 529 "Shitty"
Built 1984. The last loco for the English market
built at the Elstow Works in Bedford. Spent its working life at Severn Trent
Water's Stoke Bardolph Water Reclamation Works. Hence its name!
Ruston 222068 "Berry Hill"
Built in 1943 for the Ministry of Supply. This loco finished
its working life at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield, as part of the NCB built
railway which was used for the annual Miners Gala and ran one day a year.
Baguley Drewery 3703 "NG24"
Built 1974 (rebuilt Hunslet- Barclay 1986). This
50HP. 5 Ton battery electric loco spent its 20 year working life at R.A.F.
Chilmark, an underground armaments store near Salisbury, before its move to
the G.V.L.R.
Lister/Blackstone 53726 Gentleman's Carriage
Built 1963. Small locomotives
such as this were used on the lightest of track to carry peat from peat
bogs. This loco was in service with Fisons plc and its predecessors at
Wilmslow and Ashcott, Somerset.
Deutz 10249
Built 1932 and delivered to the Buttermere Green Slate Quarries
in Cumberland. It was returned to the German manufacturers for repair
(possibly reconditioning) in 1939 and arrived back at the quarry a month
before the outbreak of war. Powered by a single cylinder two-stroke 12HP
engine.
Motor Rail 8739 "Pioneer"
Built 1942 and delivered to McAlpines in Wiltshire.
After various owners mainly in Northamptonshire, it ended its working life
at the Charlecote Works of Pioneer Aggregates Ltd. They kindly let the North
Warwickshire Railway Society have it on permanent loan for duties at their
Nuneaton railway. When the society received their marching orders from the
local council, they assigned the loan to us.
Ruston & Hornsby 198297 "Annie"
Built in 1939 at Lincoln. Went first to
contractors Charles Brand Ltd for use in their contract to extend the Royal
Edward Dock at Avonmouth. From 1942 for nearly 30 years it worked at an
underground explosive store in North Wales before passing into preservation.
