The Golden Valley Light railway

A 2ft (610mm) Narrow Gauge Railway in Derbyshire

Baguley Drewery 3703 "NG24"

Built 1974 (rebuilt Hunslet- Barclay 1986). This 50HP. 5 Ton battery electric loco spent its 20 year working life at R.A.F. Chilmark, an underground armaments store near Salisbury, before its move to the G.V.L.R.

Locomotive Specifications
Built - 1974 (rebuilt 1986)
Power - 50HP
Volts - 96
Weight - 5 tons

The loco is fitted with modern electronic control equipment, which means that the battery's power is not passed through resistances to waste, when running at low speeds. Because of its low speed controllability, shunting is a pleasure with this loco.

The loco arrived with a 35amp 3-phase battery charger, but due to lack of a suitable supply, the loco is currently charged from a 13amp socket. One of the control electronic modules, was replaced soon after it's arrival, so the loco now drives both axles, rather than one.

Movement from R.A.F. Chilmark was kindly sponsored by East Midlands Electricity, who put their substation delivery lorry at our disposal. This lorry equipped with a HIAB crane moved the loco to the GVLR on the 16th December 1994.
